Associate Managing Consultant at Mastercard

Class: 2018
Major: Economics Major, Spanish Minor, MMS Certificate
Fields of Interest: Consulting and Data Analytics

After graduating from Duke, I taught as a high school math teacher at Swiss Semester, an American semester-long boarding school program in Zermatt, Switzerland. This was a three month program that immersed me in the Swiss Alps, skiing, hiking, and climbing, in addition to teaching. After that, I began my full time job in Chicago as a Business Consultant at APT. Now part of MasterCard, APT is a data analytics consulting firm. In my role, we help large, consumer-facing companies like McDonalds, Walgreens, and Starbucks leverage their data — using our proprietary platform — to make better business decisions. In just my first year, I've gotten a lot of great experience performing analysis, presenting to clients, project management, and managing large datasets.

My favorite part about the MMS certificate was definitely George Grody's capstone class. Making data-driven decisions about our business in the Capsim business simulation game was great practice for the job I currently have, as were the presentations we gave on the business where we justified each choice we made. My advice to current MMS students is to network to figure out what you may enjoy. You can learn a lot from people in industry, and I've always found folks (especially Duke alumni) are willing to chat to bright and interested students. I'm in a job I love, and that's largely because I spent a lot of time learning from then-employees about the company.
