I Thought this Course Counted for the Certificate?

Do you ever wonder why the courses you took for the MMS certificate don’t show up on your advisement report? You have a clear understanding of what requirements you have and haven’t met yet for your major, but all of your MMS courses are not there and it looks confusing? Don’t worry, you aren’t alone.

The current systems don’t track the certificate elective courses. But you are still getting credit, so you can rest easy! We are tracking all of the courses internally through the MMS department. If you have reached a panic mode, let us know and we can confirm for you which classes we have record of and which we need to discuss.

We will go over all of this with you when you come in for senior capstone advising, but it is best for you to be looking at this in advance. Here are a few tips to help you through this process:

All our core and elective courses are listed on our website. They are listed both by overall courses and by what is being offered for each semester. Periodically check to make sure you are taking courses that are on the list.

Study abroad courses need to be approved by MMS in order to count. It doesn’t happen automatically. You will need to email your paperwork to bwilson@soc.duke.edu to have the directors review it before it can be approved. Courses will need to have relevant business topics and length similar to Duke courses to be considered for MMS approval.

Only two courses can double count between your certificate and your major and minor. What this means: Public Policy Studies majors cannot take 3 or more PPS courses to count towards the certificate. If you think that you have enough courses, but you haven’t taken into account double-counts, you may need to look over your record again or have us look for you.

You cannot count towards the certificate more than 3 courses in any department, including MMS. The MMS 450 capstone counts as one of your MMS courses. This means only 2 other MMS designated courses can count towards the certificate.

To help make tracking the courses for yourself easier, MMS has created an online tool! Go to https://markets.duke.edu/certificate-progress to track your progress!
