Dr. Yvette Bonaparte has redesigned the MMS elective Business Communications for the spring 2020 semester.
I am a graduate of the MBA program at Fuqua (with a concentration in marketing), and after a corporate marketing career that spanned over twenty years (focused primarily on health care and consumer packaged goods), I returned to school and earned my PhD in Leadership Studies in 2013. Along the way, I established a consulting practice focused on diversity and inclusion and strategic marketing/communications and began teaching courses at local universities. In addition to teaching Business Communications in the Markets and Management Studies Program, I have taught in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Certificate Program at Duke.
The Business Communications course provides a conceptual framework for effective business communication, focusing on principles, techniques, and practices needed to communicate with various audiences in different business environments. The course jointly emphasizes both written and oral communication to help students develop applied, practical communication skills that will enhance their business knowledge and acumen.
Effective communication is often a key contributor to an individual's success. Without solid communications skills, it's possible for you to have the best idea ever, and no one would ever know. It's really important to be able to communicate in a clear, concise and compelling way.
I'm really thrilled to have the opportunity to return to Duke to teach this course and am looking forward to it.
