Interview with M&M Associate Director, Deb Reisinger

Tell us about your background.

I've been at Duke since 2000. My primary work focuses on using languages for specific purposes, including marketing, policy, and global health. At Duke, I direct a program called Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum, and in the summers, I run a study abroad program in Montreal on the marketing of the arts and culture industries. Outside of work, I love to be outdoors, running, cycling, or exploring new cities with my family.

What is your involvement with the Markets & Management Certificate?

I've been teaching M&M courses for about 10 years. Business and Culture in the Francophone World (FR 321S) introduces students to the cultural specificities of working in French-speaking countries, including communication styles, negotiation strategies, and linguistic marketing. In 2012, I created the Duke in Montréal program, a 4 week summer program. We've had the opportunity to visit dozens of marketing agencies, to meet with artists and consultants, and to enjoy Montréal's great summer festivals. In the summer of 2017, I took on a more central role at M&M as Associate Director, and am now working on an exciting spring conference on social media marketing.

Why do you think the certificate is beneficial?

The M&M certificate offers students an opportunity to put theory into practice. Our courses are based on real-world cases, so students can make a more seamless connection between their coursework and the working world. We also focus on building communication and teamwork skills, which are crucial for successful partnerships in business and in life.

What is your favorite part of working at Duke?

My favorite part of Duke is the students, hands down. They push me to dig deeper, to step outside of my comfort zone, and to take pedagogical risks. Duke is a pretty unique place, and I love that it rewards creative thinking.

What would you like to tell current Markets & Management students?

Come by and get to know us! I'm in the office most Wednesday afternoons, and we'll be hosting some fun M&M gatherings this fall.
