Psychology major and Economics minor Elizabeth Wise talks to us about why she is pursuing an MMS certificate. Elizabeth is a junior and is currently part of the MMS Ambassador team.
The MMS Certificate was already on my radar when I started my freshman year at Duke. I knew I wanted to pursue it because of my interest in business, and the interdisciplinary nature would help me figure out what else I wanted to study.
The first course I took was Managerial Effectiveness with Professor George Grody during my freshman spring. I think taking a course with Grody is a great introduction to the MMS Certificate program. He has so many stories from his many years of experience in the business world, and he cares a lot about seeing his students succeed.
My favorite course I have taken is Psychology of Consumers with Dr. Angela Vieth. I am fascinated by consumer psychology because it is at the intersection of all of my academic interests. It was an elective for my MMS Certificate as well as an elective for my Psychology major. I think understanding why consumers behave the way that they do and why they choose to buy certain products is extremely relevant.
I am interested in consumer and organizational psychology, and I think studying psychology and economics at Duke has really allowed me to dive deeper into my interests. I hope to apply both the analytical and creative aspects of my skillset to a future career in marketing or consulting.
The MMS Certificate is a great way to get an interdisciplinary education with a focus on developing a skillset that will help you in the business world. I have gotten to take some extremely cool and interesting classes through the MMS program because of the variety of core courses and electives offered.
