How MMS Courses Helped with Interviewing

Reilly Walsh

When I began my academic career at Duke, I was unsure of where and how I would go about my future. The Markets and Management courses provided me with a clear way of navigating my future. I was given the opportunity to take courses that have helped develop my analytical and decision-making skills. From Managerial Accounting to Markets and Management, I used all my skills to make complex decisions. These courses allowed me to recognize how I wanted to proceed with my career and internships. Continually, each of the courses gave me high conversation points during interviews that made me feel comfortable and knowledgeable about finance.

One of my favorite courses at Duke was Managerial Accounting taught by Professor Skender. This is a course that comes after the pre-requisite of Financial Accounting, but in a much smaller class setting where you can have a relationship with Professor Skender. It provides you essential skills in accounting, which are essential in your interviews moving forward. The class forces you to communicate and talk through each situation with your classmates through projects and assignments that are group-based.

Overall, as you move forward in choosing your classes, each MMS course gives you valuable skills that connect in multiple ways. After taking the capstone and six other courses, I have grown as a better teammate in group assignments and can speak comfortably in the interview process. The three core skills I have learned include: communication, accounting, and valuation, all of which I did not have any knowledge in before the Markets and Management Certificate.
